Electrical Equipment Even as computer prices began to fall in the late 80s and 90s, LED lights that were used in these systems still drove up the cost because of the difficulty in manufacturing these lights. Most companies kept the cost of their electronics on the low end, so they chose to use red LED lights, as red was the most common LED light and the cheapest to manufacture. Computer businesses were the prime example of sticking with the color red, even when the LED-color spectrum had expanded to offer blue and green colors. In the early 90s, Nintendo introduced a 3-D system called Virtual Boy, a niche product that aimed to provide 3-D images to players. According to Nintendo, the addition of blue and green colors to the LED screen would have made an item that most folks would have seen as too expensive. Now, LED lights are less costly and found in popular items, such as televisions, grow lights and computer screens. Why Electronics Use LEDs Before television sets ever included LED lights in their screens, they used old cathode ray tubes to broadcast the image on a fluorescent screen. The cathode ray tubes and fluorescent screens were nice in the early 80s and 90s, but the restrictions of projected images on screens presented poor picture quality compared to the newer technology of Plasma and LCD screens. Huge things LED televisions gave to clients were the brighter screens and more vibrant colors that plasma and LCD screens could not replicate. One major benefit that LED lights had over plasma and LCD screens was the ability to last up to 110,000 hours of continuous usage, and while fluorescent bulbs lasted maybe a few years within an electronic device, an LED light could last a lifetime. For example, Light Emitting Diodes could remain functional for years within LED grow lights to give a continuous light source for plants that no fluorescent bulb could mimic. Of course, fluorescent bulbs are used within grow light products, but they cannot offer the efficiency, low energy cost and durability that LED lights can.
